Because of my love of Do-It-Yourself projects, I’ve always enjoyed experimenting with different at-home beauty treatments that normally require an expensive visit to the salon. Plus, if there’s an opportunity for me to save a couple dollars, I’m always down. Now that we are all spending more time at home and don’t have access to salons at the moment, these DIY options are a great alternative! Many of these treatments definitely have a learning curve and take some practice. But, if I was able to teach myself these DIY treatments, you can too! Here is everything you need to know to get started, and some purchase options to bring the glam squad right to you at home!
Silk Touch Plus Keratin Vegan Home Treatment Kit
I’ve struggled with my curly hair all my life, so I just HAD to share this amazing solution to kinks and frizz with my fellow curly gals (or just those who want generally smoother hair)!
A few years ago, I began researching hair salons that offered Keratin treatments for curly hair in NYC. (Keratin is a chemical solution that is applied to the hair, locked in with a flat iron, and rinsed out for smoother, straighter hair that lasts months.) I came across Hair Bar NYC online, and saw that it had amazing reviews, in addition to awesome prices for Keratin (and a Groupon for first-time customers)! I love a good deal, as we all know, so I was excited to try this place out. I loved the entire experience of getting my Keratin treatment at Hair Bar: the staff was so friendly and fun, and the treatment was quick and effective. I was absolutely amazed by the results I got from the Silk Touch Keratin treatment– after dealing with my curls for about 25 years, getting out of the shower with silky, (almost completely) straight hair was literal magic happening in front of my eyes. The best part of this treatment was that it lasted about 6 months, maybe a bit longer. It was incredible, and I went back time and time again to get this same treatment for the amazing price.
As we can all agree, it’s been tough not having access to hair salons during the COVID-19 quarantine. Whether you’re a curly gal, highlights gal, or just haven’t had a haircut in months, I think everyone was feeling the pain a little bit. I began minorly panicking that my curls were coming back in full force, especially with the summer humidity looming. So, as you can imagine, I was ecstatic when Hair Bar began offering Home Kits for Keratin treatments! I ordered right away and got to it as soon as the package arrived.
As you can see from this incredible before-and-after picture, the results are insane. Not only was this an at-home treatment done by amateurs (my roommate and myself), it was also cheaper than the salon treatment (I didn’t need to use the entire bottle for one treatment– it lasted for two)! This “after” photo was taken immediately after washing the Keratin out of my hair and simply blowdrying (no fancy brush or flat iron used). The whole process took a couple of hours, but it is SO worth it. There are a few steps, all of which are relatively easy, but you just need to be sure to do them in order and to completion! Luckily, the home kit came with everything you might need, including gloves to protect your hands!
- Silk Touch Plus Keratin Spray Bottle
- Clarifying Shampoo
- Hair Mask
- Straightener Comb
- Hair Clips
- Pair of Gloves
How To Use:
*Note: There are different steps for color-treated hair. I used the following for my non-color-treated hair.
- Wash hair twice with Clarifying Shampoo (included)
- Completely dry hair
- Divide hair into 4(ish) sections using hair clips (included)
- Spray Silk Touch Plus Keratin onto hair, working the product through with hands and straightener comb until hair is completely soaked
- Allow to process (sit) for 30 minutes
- Completely dry hair (with product still in hair…feels a little icky)
- Flat iron hair (this should be extremely precise and thorough, use small/thin sections of hair until 100% straight, absolutely no kinks)
- Rinse product out of hair
- Apply Hair Mask and let sit for 5 minutes
And that’s it! The at-home kit will probably keep my hair straight for about 4 months (vs. 6+ when done at the salon), but for me, that’s totally worth it!
(Note: I’ve tried a TON of products with Keratin in it, and nothing works as well as Hair Bar’s. The only thing that came even remotely close to this kit was the OGX 30 Day Smoothing Treatment, available on Amazon.)
